Chacon's 'Madonna and Child with Bird'
"Chacon's 'Madonna and Child with Bird' " . 8" x 6" . oil on wood panel

This image was originally painted by Ignacio Chacon around 1765. (His painting was featured on the U.S. postage stamp for Christmas 2006. Michael Osborne cropped and adapted the image to accommodate the postage stamp dimensions.)
It was painted in the style of Cuzco, Peru. Chacon is believed to have worked there as an artist from the years 1745-1775.
To the Incan culture, birds were considered sacred and were thought to have the ability to reach the sun god, thus by including the little bird, the Christ Child was shown to have divine status.
It is also believed that Chacon was influenced by a painting by Bartolomeo Murillo, 'Holy Family of the Little Bird'.

Of Dvorak's Mother and Child

'Of Dvorak's Mother and Child' . 8" x 6" . oil on linen panel
© 2012 kay eneim
I painted this image as a way to learn the original artist's use of color and light.
It is an adaptation from the work of Frantisek Dvorak (1862-1927).
I was very moved by that painting... it was a joy to paint.

My first completed oil painting.
This is a cropped and adapted version of William Bouguereau's well-known painting depicting Christ extending His hand down to His cousin, St. John the Baptist.
William Adolphe Bouguereau (1823-1905), a French painter, was one of the most prominent painters of his time. His abilities as a Master have been in dispute by some ever since. Some critics claim his figures appear static. I think they are beautiful, none the less.

Mary With Child

'Mary With Child'. oil on linen panel . 20 x 16 . 2007

Pere Serra, a Spaniard and one of the most important Catalonian painters from the late 14th Century, painted the Blessed Virgin Mary surrounded by the apostles in a painting he named 'The Pentecost' (1393-1394).
I loved everything about his image of Our Lady, but preferred her isolated from Serra's painting. His painting has her surrounded by the apostles and saints...a stunning image...but here we have Our Lady with Child, presenting us with her 'fiat'.
