... a Lenten meditation for me...

Peter Paul Rubens' original depiction in 1620 of the Crucifixion is amazing.

It became a great starting place for me in this meditation through painting.

Painting Zurbaran's image became a powerful Lenten meditation for me.

Francisco de Zurbaran (1598-1664), a Spaniard, painted 'Christ on the Cross' in 1627.

... I began this painting during Lent in 2005 and have only worked on it during Lent each year thereafter... this Lent it was finished. It has been interesting to come back to it each year, with a new perspective and sometimes a new approach in technique.

I can't remember the name of the artist who originally painted this image hundreds of years ago, and haven't been able to track it down.

I'm struggling with some glare on this photo... it's difficult to photograph oil paintings, especially the darker ones. I'll be working on that.
