Abraham Darby roses... by David Austin Roses... simply a favorite for my still life setups! The garden was bursting with them this spring!

Pink Lisianthus and Abraham Darby roses are among my favorite flowers from the garden… they do fine in our hot summer months.

Even after cutting the Lisianthus and putting them in a vase, they last for weeks… nearly as if I just picked them! They're wonderful.

And, for some reason unknown to me, the images on this blog aren't showing as well as they do on the website. I have heard other artists complain about the same problem. I will need to spend some time researching and resolving that issue.

At any rate, here is a link to the image on the website for a little better look at one of my favorite subject matters to paint.

I luuuuuv this little vase... I just loved the embossed design and was eager to paint it.

It's perfect for so many arrangements... for my daughter's sweet peas... and roses... and lavender... and... well, her roses were 'to die for'. They were the inspiration, first and foremost. Sooo beautiful, they were!

This is one of those times when the photo doesn't show the life and depth of the impasto strokes... but hopefully you can get an idea of this one.

Abraham Darby roses are, to me, the most fragrant, most beautiful roses.

I have been pruning them back, as we must do here every January to give them a fresh start.

I will miss their blossoms very much and will be anxiously awaiting the Spring.

These flowers are from our garden.

Every year I bring a collection of flowers from our garden to the Scottsdale Artists' School to share and to make my still life arrangement for a workshop with Sherrie McGraw. This year was my fourth year to study with her. Sherrie is truly a master artist and teacher. I have been very fortunate to study from her.

Many of Sherrie's students return every year, without fail, for her workshops. Since most of the fellow artists travel from all parts of the country, they are often waiting for these roses to compose their set-ups. I love sharing them.

As it is, these roses are a dickens to paint...so we all come away with a lot learned.

Thankfully, the 'Abraham Darby' bushes are usually in full bloom when Sherrie comes to town in the spring. They make exquisite bouquets...very frangrant. If you like to grow roses and have lots of room for one of these Austin roses, the 'Abraham Darby' rose is a real winner.
