I painted this little painting with a Peruvian influence...

"And a great sign appeared in Heaven:
a woman, clothed with the sun,
and the moon under her feet,
and upon her head a crown of twelve stars."
(Revelation 12:1)

Girl With the Abalone Shell Earrings

This North American Indian girl was of the Tsawatenok tribe of the Pacific Northwest, circa 1914.
Her earrings, made from abalone shells, were something only the nobility of her tribe could wear.

I found her to be stunningly beautiful. I loved painting her.

Kutenai Gatherer of the Reeds

Thankfully, the Kutenai tribal life was documented by Edward S. Curtis at the turn of the twentieth century.  Curtis titled his photograph of this scene... 'Kutenai Duck Hunter'.

To me, she didn't appear to be hunting ducks... not at all.
She was clearly gathering reeds for her basket weaving... an art perfected by her tribe.

The title of my painting reflects just that setting... her gathering of reeds for her beautiful baskets... in the serene and beautiful morning!

I complete this painting in 2016 (or so I thought), but the foreground kept bothering me.

I decided it needed more work. Much better now.

Completed and framed, this painting is now showing in a new model home in Carefree, Arizona!

Thanks to the photographic work of Edward S. Curtis at the turn of the twentieth century, Curtis' photo showing the Navajo crossing through Canyon de Chelly became a wonderful resource for completing this painting commissioned by the interior designer, Aldrete Design.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

I painted this one in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe... depicting the image of herself that she miraculously ingrained on the tilma of St. Juan Diego.

St. Juan Diego's tilma made from primitive maguey cloth during the sixteenth century... now centuries old... is on view in the basilica in Mexico City at the sight of the apparition. Her image is extraordinary... truly extraordinary.

'Yellow Peonies'

The blooming season for yellow peonies seems to be very short... at least from a painter's perspective. And they certainly don't care to bloom anywhere in Arizona. At least I've never heard of peonies blooming in Arizona. It's a pity.

As such, I was very happy to find these yellow peonies from the local florist... very happy.
It can be tricky to find them and I needed to finish up this painting begun last year.
I think yellow peonies are really beautiful... extraordinary.

There are some David Austin roses from the garden in this mix, too. They have been exploding with blossoms lately... happily blooming in Arizona.
